Case 3.2: The Trouble with Grit describes a science-loving student who is struggling with turning in homework (Gorski & Pothini, 2018). I could sympathize with Ms. Grady’s sentiments and frustrations with Samantha not turning in her work when her test scores show that she is intellectually capable of completing the tasks. Ms. Grady becomes increasingly frustrated when she is unable to reach a parent via phone and learns that Samantha’s younger siblings turn in their homework promptly. I also could guess before the case study revealed it, that Samantha was dealing with a tough home life that prevented her from focusing on her studies at home. Upon further investigation and speaking with another teacher Ms. Grady learns that Samantha is the child of a single mother who works late into the night leaving Samantha as the main caretaker for her younger siblings. Learning this answers the question of why Samantha does not turn in her homework, but Ms. Grady does not fully understand the impact of the situation considering she was raised under different circumstances.
