Bleeding Kansas 1854 Contest to get more people on the ground to determine if Kansas is going to be free or slave North starts first Emigrant Aid Societies Paid New Englanders to go to Kansas and settle it They set up the town of Lawrence People cross the border from MO and vote illegally The First Kansas legislature is majority pro-slavery/southern Immediately tension erupts If it wasn’t for the border ruffians, Kansas probably would have been a free state Franklin Pierce was determined to uphold the election They hold another election the following year, and once again the border ruffians came over and voted illegally The territorial governor says that he can’t do anything about this because the border ruffians are sending him telegraphs with death threats if he does anything The new territorial legislature sets up in Lecompton and pass a constitution with slave codes to regulate slavery The Free Soilers create their own territorial legislature that sets up in Topeka
