-statesWhites in the south used the term paternalism, which meant that whites who were slave owners would act in the best interests of slaves, justifying that slavery was okay. Many slaves took advantage and acted as though they were unintelligent and ruined or broke tools making the slave owners think it was an accident rather than rebellion of how they were being treated.
