Chapter 1 Climate : a broad composition of the average condition of a region, measured in terms of such things as temperature, precipitation, snow and ice cover, and winds. Applies to longer-term changes Weather: shorter fluctuations that last hours, days, or weeks. Earth: average temperature: 15 o C, 59 o F Surface range: 0-30 o C (32-86 o F) - Formed 4.6 Billion years ago - Slow warming between 300 and 100 million years ago - Gradual cooling in last 100 million years - ice sheets, advanced and retreated during last 3 million years at cycles of tens of thousands of years - last 1000 years relatively warm and stable climate, small oscillations Temperature: Temperature: Kinetic Energy KE = ½ mv 2 = 3/2 kT, where k = constant Temp: a mesure of kinetic energy Temperature Scales: Fahrenheit: 212, 32, -480 (boiling, freezing, absolute zero) Celsius: 100, 0, -273 Kelvin: 373, 273, 0 T c = 5/9(T F – 32) T F = 9/5T c + 32 T k = 273.15 + T c T c = T k – 273 100 o F = average body temperature of cows
