Definition Argument Purpose : to increase your skill in arguing about how a term should be defined or about what constitutes an example of that term. Readings: Task: Write an essay in which the major claim involves a question of definition . That is, your essay explains why one particular instance should be considered as part of a larger category (for instance, that the photos in the NYT article should be considered family memorabilia, not pornography). Or, you may argue about how a category should be defined (for instance, how "marriage" should be defined). Or, you might argue about whether or not something occurred. Sample Topics: Many current controversies involve questions of definition. About some of these, such as those concerning when life begins or ends, it is difficult to contribute something fresh or new unless you have special experience.
