2 Javert Vs. Valjean The story of Les Misérables observes the life of Jean Valjean, who spent 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread and is finally released on parole. Jean Valjean has much determination to break his parole and begins a new life under the assumed name of Monsieur Madeleine. Javert was born in prison as both of his parents were "criminals."; Javert grew up embarrassed of his background and used his determination to rise above his past, which led him to be a warder and do what is "right" to feel worthy. Through the story of Javert and Valjean, we see their similarities and differences that will be explained. Early in the story, we are introduced to Javert and Valjean; this introduction provided a clear picture of what seemed to be vastly different men. Beginning with Valjean, we meet him in the story being in prison and being verbally mistreated by Javert as he delivers him papers to be released on parole. Upon his release, Valjean has trouble finding work and a place to sleep
