Brian Ham Ms. T.L. Ware English 1302 2 April 2008 Will Steinbeck Be Yet Another Victim? The novella Of Mice and Men has been on many high school reading lists for quite some time now due to it’s use of many literary elements and it’s depiction of the “American dream.” However, many parents have become uneasy due to the novella’s frequent use of language, its sexual innuendos, and its use of violence as a solution to problems. I believe that these elements of the story are required to really convey the message of the book and taking the book off high school reading lists would be a tragedy for the literary community. Many parents would argue that John Steinbeck’s frequent use of language is offensive and encourages children to use these unacceptable words in every day conversation. Throughout the book Steinbeck uses just about every curse word that would have been used in the time the book is set in including a particularly racist term for African Americans and words used to belittle women. However, Steinbeck only uses this language to get his reader into the time setting of the book. To take this book off the high school reading list would only dampen one of many sources of children’s exposure to
