Based on my observations and volunteer work in the preschool room, I have noticed a wide range of vocabulary words used by the preschoolers. Some students have very low vocabulary knowledge while some can already speak complex sentences. For example, one student already knows what the words “pollution”, “salutations” and “guardian” means while another student does not know what the word “afternoon means”. I believe that a student’s vocabulary is based on how much they pay attention during group and reading time and whether or not their parents read and educate them outside the classroom. The books that the teachers read in class do not have very high vocabulary demands. Many of the books are for preschoolers so they have words that a preschooler should know based off past books read or educational television shows.
