Social Facts: Durkheim argued that society represents an emergent reality – it emerges in the combination of other realities to create something different ie: you have 2 elements, H and O; if you combine them in certain ways, you get a result,H20, which is an emergent phenomena – so it must be explained on its own terms, not interms of H or O So when humans come together, social facts emerge and it must be studied on its own Social facts are external and constraining to individuals (they shape behavior) Value systems and normative systems meet this criteria – so when we talk about normative systems (family, religion, education), they have a reality beyond the individual Normative systems don’t exist if individuals act rationally What do you do in a normative constraint? Cheat when you can, if you want to be rational Social Solidarity: refers to the cohesion of society, nature of social bonds key word of inquiry in D.O.L is social solidarity 18
Object of D.O.L is to understand how social solidarity changes as it moves from simplicity to complexity (like Comte) Durkheim’s image of social organization has 2 sides - also reflects Comte 1st side: social reality is a subjective reality – it exists at the level of shared ideas, aka the collective conscience Collective Conscience/Consciousness: social phenomena that is subjective to the values and belief systems Constraining b/c it shapes the behavior of its participants Durkheim argued that in "traditional" or "simpler" societies (those based around clan, family or tribal relationships), religion played an important role in uniting
