Class 7 On Confucianism -History -Key problem Confucianism faced -Confucius’ answer -The way of the Gentleman (Confucius’ ethical philosophy) *History Founder: Confucius (551-479 BC) Info: Forced to work hard in childhood; not an elitist; Began studies at 15 and became a teacher; Main project he tried to institute was both political and ethical; He wanted to reform society by improving the ethics of its individuals. -Believed the only way to do this was by holding office (power). -By age 50, he embarked on a journey… called “The Great Journey” trying to gain public office. -Would not give up integrity to gain office. -Didn’t want to “get hands dirty.” -After his death, Confucius’ followers gathered his teachings in a book called “The Analects” -NOTE: Confucius did not write this book -Within about 50-150 years of his death, it became main ethical philosophy. Confucius’ Education: Poetry, Government, Music, Divination -Preferred interactive teaching -Very Humble -Hardest on Self
