Energy drinks What questions does Rhonda need to answer? Ingredients of drinks What they do in the body Energy When we say that something gives us “energy” what does that mean? What is energy? Energy makes the world go around What is energy? Energy is defined as the capacity to perform work Energy cannot be created and cannot be destroyed It can only be transferred form one form or another This is the conservation of energy Chemical energy Is a form of potential energy Is found in food , gasoline, and other fuels (pic of a Hydrocarbon like octane in gasoline) Living cells and automobile engines use the same basic process to make chemical energy to do work

Cellular respiration Is the chemical breakdown of fuel molecules prerformeed within your cells Produces heat and provides energy for cells to do work ATP- is a big molecule that is stored energy Food + oxygen = 60% heat energy and 40% atp = carbon dioxide + water Rhonda recalled: “a food’s calorie content was the simplest reflection of its energy content.” Definition : calorie = amount of energy that raises the temperature of 1gram of water by 1 degree Celsius Where did Rhonda find the calorie information? On food labels, the fda requires The list of ingredients Key nutrition facts Charley’s list of questions What is the nature of each ingredient listed on the cans Whole wheat- a starch- provides raw energy and raw material Soybean oil- unsaturated fat Salt- helps carry nutrients into the cells Monoglycaides- What is the physiological role of each in the human body? Steroids are very different from fats in structure and function Cholesterol is the “base steroid” from which your body produces other steroids o Ex. Sex hormones Carbohydrates include Small sugar molecules in soft drinks Long starch molecules in pasta and potatoes Monosaccharides anre simple sugars Glucose, found in sports drinks Fructose, found in fruit Honey contains both glucose and fructose Is there any glucose in your sports dirinks?

General formula for all momosaccharides : CH2O Glucose and fructose are isomers ( their formula is the same but their atoms are arranged differently Monosaccharides are the main fuel that cells use for cellular work Monosaccharides when in an aqueious solution from rings Mont molecules used in your bodies are polymers Polymers are made by stringing together many smaller molecules called
