Chapter 7 Biology s the scientific study of life It has two major dimensions: o Life is structured on a size scale ranging from the molecular to the global o Biology’s scope stretches across the enormous diversity of life on earth 1.7 million identified species 5 to 30 millinon estimated species Grouping species: humans are inclined to categorize items that are similar into smaller groups and even sort groups into broader and more inclusive categories TAXONOMY Is the branch of biology that names and classifies species Taxonomy is a branch of systematics o Taxonomy = systematics Systematics is the process of organizing a species Taxonomic Hierarchy o Domain Bacteria Prokaryotic domains Archaea Prokaryotic domains Eukarya o Kingdom Protista Cenerally single celled Plantae Multicellular Produce their own food Fungi Multicellular Absorb nutrents from decompostion Animals Multicellular Consume food o Division o Class o Order o Family o Genus o Species Underlying the diversity of life is a striking unity, especially at then lower levels of structure

o Ex. 1 the universal genetic language of dna o Ex. 2 the architecture of eukaryotic cilia Evolution: biology’s unifying theme Similar organisms have a common ancestor The more similar the organisms, the more recent their common ancestor (bears vs. mammals vs. eukaryotes) The Darwinin view of life The evolutionary view of life came into focus in 1859 when charles Darwin Published THE ORGIN OF LIFE 2main points o descent with modification life’s unity comes from common ancestry life forms are modified with time o Darwin did not invent the idea of evolution o ** natural slection the primary mechanism of evolution in time traits that are fitted to a particular environment ( naturally selected ) will be over- represented in the population adaptation Ex. Figure 1.14 Drawn synthesized concept of natural selection form two observations: o Lots of individuals, but limited resources Plus o Some possess traits that make them more successful than other Equals o Successful individuals more kids Darwin studied finches and that there are 14 species o ADAPTIVE RADIATION 1 ancestors gives rise to many spices Artificial Selection when humans screen heritabe traits in populations, we have ARTIFICAIAL SELECTION natural selection ex. The development of an antibiotic – resistant bacteria Darwin causes an explosion in biological research The word science is derived from a latin verb meaning “toknow” (the Verb SCIO) Main scientific approaches: o Discovery science o Hypothesis driven science

The Scientific Method Hypothetico – deductive reasoning: o Make an observation o Ask a question about the subject o Pose an hypothesis o Make a prediction o test hypothesis Photosynthesis: converting light energy to chemical energy Photosynthesis is the process that converts light energy to chemical energy using carbon
