Social Norms Dr. Kelly Cox 11/27/07 -Behavioral regularities- system of meaning for us to understand what is acceptable Frame- frame in which we interpret and make decisions are socially acceptable System of mutual understanding- Ought statements- moral values External sanctions- penalties -Consensual standards that describe what behaviors should and should not be performed in a given context (Forsyth, 1994) - A rule about which there is at least some degree of consensus, which is enforced through social sanctions Festinger (1954)- affiliation needs and social comparison processes Asch (1951)- group conformity Sherif (1936)- reference to group norms Distribution of cost/benefit allocation for behavior Content, Distribution, Enforcement Example- Thin Body Norm -Social norms and health related behaviors -Social norm emergence -Benefits for adherence -Costs for deviance -How do they weigh the costs and benefits? -Economic model for cost benefit analysis
