SELF DRIVING CARS WILL CHANGE EVERYTHINGSelf-driving cars otherwise known as autonomous cars refer to vehicles which donot require any human input to control or operate them. Self-driving cars utilize complexalgorithms, sensors, software, and machine learning to navigate and drive the vehicles.Although self-driving vehicles are still illegal in most parts of the world, experts predictthat they might take over major highways as early as 2030. The debate on whether toadopt autonomous cars has created a rift between innovators and public safetystakeholders. On one hand, those in support of self-driving cars believe that they willreduce road fatalities, are less prone to human errors, and reduce costs of car insurance.Self-driving cars are cool, right? They are evidence of how far our technology hasadvanced. On the other hand, opponent to self-driving cars argue that these cars are proneto hacking, expensive to train and are unable to recognize dire circumstances. I will tellyou how self-driving cars are only good to show off how advanced our technology canget. They are not practical!Presently, most vehicle manufacturers produce semi-autonomous cars that includefeatures like assisted parking, advanced braking, adaptive cruise control, and limitedautopilot capabilities. These cars are miles ahead, technology-wise than the cars we hadin 2008. Similarly, self-driving cars rely on global positioning system (GPS), laser beams, cameras, and advanced sensing systems to detect highway boundaries, signs and signals, and unforeseen obstacles (Vella, Matt, and Steinmetz 1). Motor vehicle manufacturerslike Tesla, General Motors and Mercedes Benz are leading the race in the autonomousvehicle technologies by investing billions of dollars into trials, research and developmentof self-driving cars. The excitement around self driving cars is expected to increase
because big information technology firms like Google are backing the driverless vehicleconcept. The journey towards driverless cars might be closer than most people hadpredicted. There are several potential benefits of self-driving cars. For starters, proponents ofself-driving cars suggest that automation can help reduce the number of road fatalitiesleading to greater road safety. The U.S government estimates that during the 1970s, roadfatalities killed over 60,000 residents due to driver behavior (Lafrance 2). This led to adramatic shift towards road safety that required vehicle manufacturers to installadditional safety features like seat belts and ubiquitous airbags to improve the chances ofsurvival in road accidents. Subsequently, the number of persons killed in 2013 in the U.Sdue road fatalities fell to historic low of 32,719. In equal measure, scientists and
