A 2004 survey of almost 25,000 students revealed that more than 90 percent were satisfied with their own ethical standards and 98 percent felt that being a person of good character was important, even though 82 percent admitted having lied to a parent about something significant, 62 percent admitted lying to a teacher, 62 percent admitted cheating on a test, 22 percent admitted stealing something from a relative, 27 percent admitted stealing something from a store, and 54 percent acknowledged having hit someone “because I was angry,” all within the past 12 months.
