Texas has a relatively high birth rate, high number of foreign immigrants, and has become a minority-majority. 4) What, in order, is our population by way of racial/ethnic groups? o 49% Anglo o 35% Hispanic o 13% African American o 3% Asian American 5) We spoke about forms of discrimination, have an understanding of how De jure and De facto discrimination is manifested. What were Black Code/Jim Crow laws? o De jure discrimination: discrimination by law statutory law issues poll taxes literary test white only primaries o De facto discrimination: Discrimination by fact Racism Ex: housing, job, hospitals, restaurants, entrances o The Black Codes were laws passed on the state and local level mainly in the rural Southern states in the United States to restrict the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans . o Jim Crow laws , state and local laws in the Southern and border states of the United States from 1876 to 1964 that required racial segregation 6) Economically, we have changed a lot in the last 100 years. Which was the most important industry in Texas in the twentieth century? o oil and natural gas 7) Even though we have grown in our economic power, not all groups have benefited. What groups rate highest in poverty in Texas?
