Chapter 7: Telecommunications, the Internet, Wireless Technology 1. Concepts: convergence, bandwidth, attenuation, protocol a. Convergence- Telephone networks and computer networks converging into a single digital network using Internet standards. Also, cable companies providing voice service. b. Bandwidth- The range of frequencies that can be accommodated on a particular telecommunications channel. This is the difference between the highest and lowest frequencies that can be accommodated on a single channel. c. Protocol: set of rules and procedures governing transmission of information between two points in a network. d. Attenuation- reduction of signal strength during transmission. (Fiber optics has none) 2. What is a computer network? - 2 or more connected computers a. Components: i. client computer ii. server computer - a computer on a network that performs important network functions for client computers iii. network interface card (NIC) - a network interface device that each computer on the network contains iv. connection medium - the connection medium for linking network components can be a telephone wire, coaxial cable, or radio signal v. network operating system (NOS) - routes & manages communications on the network & coordinates network resources vi. switch - more intelligence than a hub (a very simple device that connects networks components, sending a packet of data to all other connected devices), can filter and forward data to a specified destination on the network vii.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
