Unformatted text preview: Veldman 1 Struggles for the Stock Market Anna Veldman Economics 210-05 January 31, 2008 Veldman 2 The stock market has made a little bit of a recovery today after it got off to a rough start. The Nasdaq and Standard & Poor’s 500 both ended up. Stocks first declined after MBIA reported losses this quarter, but later went back up after the CEO reassured investors that it would maintain its financial strength rating. This in turn boosted the market as it was beginning to recover. In the last week and a half the market has begun to improve. Some of the things helping the market recover are homebuilders, retailers and financials. The thoughts of the economy as a whole have started to improve with the recent rate drops by the Federal Reserve. The second rate drop decreased interest rates by another half point to three percent. Wednesday there was a surprisingly low number of jobless claims. Overall there was a lot of positive news at the end of the day Thursday.
