This is a study guide for COMM 100 Exam 1. This is only a guide . Be aware that just because something does not appear below does not guarantee that it will not appear on the exam. Be sure that you can answer the following questions, including definitions of the relevant terms. Don’t just memorize answers, think of examples and try to relate course concepts to one another. 1. What are the characteristics of communication? 2. What are the components of the communication process? 3. When we say that communication has a content and a relational dimension, what does this mean? 4. What is noise/interference? Be able to describe and recognize examples of the two different types of noise. 5. Why do we use models? What are the main differences between the models discussed in lecture? 6. What are the levels/contexts of communication, as described in the text and in lecture? What types of activities occur in each different level? Be sure you can give an example of each. 7. What are the main characteristics of the scientific method?
