Jimmy Belanger March 5, 2008 Anthropology 1100 Write up: “Reciprocity and the Power of Giving” Following, reading the article “Reciprocity and the Power of Giving” I realized how there is more to gift giving then just at holidays. I thought it was really thrilling to see how so many different societies are influenced from the act of giving. I also thought it was interesting how the article brought up the concept of an “Indian gift.” This concept has reminded me of a familiarity that I have had. My Dad does very similar things that they once did in seventeen sixty-four. He will take gifts that he gets from special occasions and give it back to the person because he feels he doesn’t need anything. Everyone in my family knows he does this, so we all label him as the “Indian giver.” I enjoyed learning about how different cultures use gift giving to maintain relationships as in some customs of our society. As well as to use it to flush them in wealth and make them feel like they have to give additional gifts. I think the act of giving is a wonderful
