Short Paper #1- Master and Man PHIL 002 Hierarchies exist in every sense of life , in every setting imaginable. From a business, to a football team , and even here at Penn State, in no functional society can every individual person be on the same social or economic level . Diversity among human beings comes naturally, and is necessary for the functioning of society in the world of today . Hierarchy leads to this diversity among human beings and allows them to strive to get to the highest level of happiness possible through perceived success . According to Leo Tolstoy, this highest level could only be achieved “by living for others” . The short story Master and Man , written by Tolstoy in 1893, is a perfect example of the structure of hierarchy in human life , and his theory about achieving the highest form of happiness . Vasili Andreevich was a wealthy businessman in 1870s Russia . Nikita was his personal assistant . Nikita had served Andreevich with an unrelenting passion for most of his adult life
