Week # 1 It can be said that language is a pre-eminent aspect of a culture. Many cultures throughout the world in both present and past have used language as a tool for survival. People use their language so casually, they don’t consciously, or subconsciously for that matter think of the words they are using, or where these words have come from. Well, if you speak one of the Indo-European languages, you don’t know where the words you are speaking have come from. Sure, your language can be traced back to a certain time period when it was influenced and created from another language. That language can then be traced back to its influence from an even older language, likely to be a dead language. From there, the even older language would be traced back to Indo-European. Why is this language so mysterious? Many languages spoken throughout Europe, parts of Asia, and parts of North America are all rooted from the Indo- European language. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem. However, it is quite possible that this language is no longer exists, nor was ever written down. All of the languages under the umbrella of the ten branches of Indo-European have very similar qualities. These qualities lie not just in phonology, but also in grammar, semantics, and morphology. Languages under the same branch such as, Italian and Spanish are more similar than two languages from two different branches. This only makes sense though as the creation of the Italian and Spanish languages were influenced by Latin.
