Alzheimer’s can progress in different rates, the duration of the illness may vary from three to twenty years, the part of memory and thinking skills are affected first Alzheimer’s Disease (continued) Next cells die in other regions of the brain, eventually the patient with Alzheimer’s will need complete care Alzheimer’s is the most common form of Dementia, which is a condition that gradually destroys brain cells and leads to a decline in mental function The condition was named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer’s, a German Doctor who stumbled upon the disease by examining the brain tissue of women who died of unusual illnesses Causes of Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s has no known single cause, but researchers have learned a lot about what may play a role They say that (AD) begins to damage the brain many years before it shows the effects Scientists think that two abnormal microscopic structures called “plaques” and “tangles” are involved with the cause of (AD) they are clumps of protein that accumulates outside the brain’s nerve cells Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease Stage one : No impairment Stage two : Very mild decline Stage three : Mild decline Stage four : Moderate decline (mild or early stage) Stage five : Moderately severe (moderate or mid stage) Stage Six : Severe decline (moderately severe or mid stage) Stage Seven : Very Severe decline (severe or late stage Stage one: No impairment (normal function) These individuals will experience no memory problems and no symptoms are obvious to a health care professional Stage Two: Very mild decline...
