David Sue English 102-EB Assignment #3 We Were Soldiers , based on Hal Moore's experience at the Battle of Ia Drang, takes place in Vietnam in 1965. The film follows Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore, Sergeant Major Basil Plumley, and the men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry. We Were Soldiers is rated R for sustained sequences of graphic war violence and for language. The film opens with a violent massacre of a French platoon in Vietnam. This scene sets the pace for the rest of the film with its bloody images and intense action. After the Vietnamese commander orders the deaths of all the foreign intruders, the film cuts to America to show Hal Moore and his men, training with each other and cherishing their last days with their families. The day before their departure, Lt. Col. Hal Moore delivers a touching speech to his men and their families, promising that "(he) will be the first one to set foot on the field, and (he) will be the last to step off."
