David Sue English 102-EB Assignment #2 The character of Othello James in Kelvin Christopher James' short story, "Ties," is not the same person at the end of the story as he was in the beginning. Since the story was written in retrospect, the beginning of the story isn't the true "beginning;" the story begins with Othello James as a boy being raised by his brother Winston Shaka James. Winston James, also known as Stone, was Othello's idol - he was everything Othello wanted to be. Stone taught Othello how to "play ball, fight dirty, to steal and rob and hustle and con people." Strangely, Othello does not seem to be very close with his mother. It seems she was much closer to Stone, and Othello was just a quiet observer to their relationship. When Stone joined the military and was shipped off to Vietnam, Othello's story abruptly stops. There is a blank space here, and the story does not resume until Stone returns from his service.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
