Iman Holmes CYB 420 3-3 Activity: HIPAA Compliance and Security Posture 1/24/2021
In an industry where HIPAA is implemented, the data must be protected. One way to ensure data is protected if a data breach occurs is to encrypt this information, even though the current HIPAA regulations do not demand it all the time. HIPAA defines encryption as “the use of an algorithmic process to transform data into a form in which there is a low probability of assigning meaning without the use of confidential process or key.”Data is first transformed into an undecipherable format know as ciphertext. When in this format, it cannot be deciphered without a security key, which will convert the data back to its original state. If an encrypted material is lost or stolen, it will not cause a HIPAA breach exposing patient data. Additionally, data encryption critical on computer networks to block hackers from obtaining access. Failure to safeguard PHI can end in an expensive and time-consuming forensic investigation to decide whether and to what extent data may have been accessed. Encryption will end all these worries. If PHI is properly encrypted, there is a low chance that anyone besides the intended individuals who have the key will be able to decrypt or decipher the data. Applying strong encryption is the most effective way to bypass a HIPAA data breach (Management, 2018). Access control is another security feature that should be implemented to prevent a data breach. Access controls give users rights and privileges to access and perform functions using data systems, applications, programs, or files. Access controls permit authorized users to enter the required data needed to accomplish job duties. These rights and privileges should be granted
