Katlyn M. Vu English Composition II Touchstone 4 February 13, 2021 Are Gun Control Laws Effective? In the United States of America; there is an on-going issue with gun control and irresponsibility of others when possessing, purchasing, or selling the firearms. Even though the gun control laws may make it harder for an individual to purchase or sell firearms; gun control laws are not as effective as many people may think. This concept is based on the fact that the statistics are increasingly high for crimes being committed with firearms. The rate for youth suicide increased due to parents not being responsible and locking up their guns when they had a permit/license to carry, and the crime rates went up even more due to retaliation to the government for more strictness on the laws on purchasing firearms to the point that people are buying and selling them illegally. So, are the current gun control laws effectively helping and protecting our society or not? The background information on the gun control laws started out as The Second Amendment, which stated (McNamara, 2017, p.1) “ The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States guarantees citizens of the nation this right through a single sentence which states that “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Gun control laws are defined as placing legal restrictions on arms to protect
civil society. The gun control laws consist of some of the following: you must be 18 years of age to purchase specific types of ammunition and shotguns, and you have to be 21 years of age to purchase a handgun. If you are a convicted felon or fugitive; then you cannot purchase nor possess a firearm. If you are caught violating the terms of the law, then prosecution is indefinite. The Federal law prohibits anyone with the conviction of possession, sales, or consumption of all or any illegal controlled substances. Another gun control law is that in order to be able to sell firearms you must be over the age of 21 years old and you must have a license in order to sell the firearms. The seller of the handguns must report to the department of justice with all records of any persons who buy guns from them or anyone they sell a firearm to. Even to sell firearms; you are thoroughly researched on your background and your mental state is evaluated as well to ensure safety when giving business owners licenses to sell firearms. (K. Schuster, 2020 P.1) The other gun control laws are as follows: gun free zones, conceal and carry permits, waiting periods, bans on sales of assault weapons and guns that high-capacity magazines, stand your ground laws, child access prevention laws, and prohibitions associated with mental illness. The pros about these listed are that it creates less possibility for accidents to happen as well as; mass shootings, officer shootings, and violent crimes. There are currently already the rules or regulations in place that consists
