Feminist Theory, Emotion, and the Building Blocks of Social Interaction

Social interaction involves communication among people acting and reacting to one another,
either face to face or via computer.

Social statuses are just one of the three building blocks that structure all social interactions.

The others are roles [a set of expected behaviors] and norms.
Emotion Management
•
Hochschild coined the term, emotion management.
•
Emotion management involved people obeying “feeling rules” and responding appropriately to the
situations in which they find themselves in.
o
Example: We are expected to mourn the end of a love relationship.
Emotional Labour
•
Emotion labour is emotion management that many people do as part of their job and for which
they are paid.
Conflict Theories of Interaction
•
Taking turns is one of the basic norms that govern conversations.
•
A large part of all conversations involved a subtle competition for attention.
Interaction As Competition And Exchange [Conflict Theory]
•
Social interaction involves competition over valued resources such as attention, approval,
prestige, information, money and so on.
•
Competitive interaction involves people seeking to gain the most –socially, emotionally, and
economically – while paying the least.
