#2 Sunaina M. Maira states that citizenship is an uneasy issue for Indian Americans who are culturally constructed as ambiguously nonwhite or foreign. This ambiguity is alleviated by the youth cultural form in which American culture is fused with ‘traditional’ Indian culture. Because of this fused youth culture, Bhangra parties become sites of racial border crossing and sexuality control because these two completely different cultures are intersecting and diluting. This ambiguity that comes from traditionally cultured Indian Americans is alleviated by the youth culture with its mix of ‘traditional’ Indian and American culture. The ‘traditional’ Indian part of this cultural mix comes from the parents of the youth, who may or may not be direct immigrants from India, but who still carry on the culture, tradition and nostalgia. But this sense of true Indian Culture and ‘tradition’ is often off because many of them came from India 30 or 40 years earlier. The American part of this culture comes not only from other American youth but also from American culture portrayed in music, movies, television and other sources of media. This new blend of culture creates a new diasporic community. While these Indian American youth are trying to carry on their culture as well as adopt a new one, there is an “eroticization of nostalgia for India” when trying to recreate Indian culture and it is a site where “‘true’
