Melissa Wilkerson AMH1050 Ch.1 Assignment 2/4/2008 Who, What, When, Where, Why: Cuba and the Yellow Press During the late part of the 19 th century and the early part of the 20th, the United States was trying to figure out its place in the world. Also, there was a battle between imperialist and non-imperialist forces right in Americas front yard. With all of these things going on, it was no surprise that journalist were able to sensationalize news of other countries like Cuba. The major reason for the riots was lack of income. In 1893, America was thrown into a depression because America had too much supply and not enough demand. The government decided that it a tariff (called the Wilson-Gorman Tariff of 1894) on all imports would help bring up America’s dollar thus taking America out of the depression. This tariff caused Cuba’s sugar price to go from 8 cents a pound to 2 cents a pound causing a depression in Cuba. The Cuba depression caused to Cubans to lash out on the
