Geometry Test – Fall 2007 – Take Home Test Use your own paper; make sure it is neat and readable! This test may be completed in a group of three or less. Please do not ask the math lab for help. 1. Durer's Polyhedral - Albrecht Durer, known for his engraving Melancholia I, was a German renaissance printmaker (1471-1528), made an important contribution to the polyhedral literature in his 1525 book, Underweysung der Messung. In the book are very interesting discussions of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedral are models worthy of an artist's inspection This book also contains the first representation of polyhedral nets. A polyhedral net is an unfolded polyhedral model used for printing.

a. Discuss the geometry found in Durer’s engraving. What is the name of the polyhedra?
b. Find the nets for the 5 platonic solids. c. Look at the angles on the faces that meet at a corner. What is the sum of the angles? For example, a cube had square faces, each angle in a cube is 90 degrees, there are three faces that meet at a corner, therefore, the sum of the angles is 3*90 = 270. d. Using checkered paper, and polyhedral nets, find the surface area for each platonic solid. Explain your calculations. Do not use formulas; use the basic formulas for polygons and the concept of surface area.
