Evaluating a rhetorical style documentary film can be a difficult task because personal opinions may be difficult to suppress when deciding if the film is good or bad. In order to truly evaluate the film’s effectiveness as a persuasive piece of art, however, a more objective assessment is needed. The film Roger and Me presents a strong argument about the dangers of laying off workers in the United States in order to outsource for cheaper labor wages. Despite any personal opinions that a viewer may have, the film utilizes strong artistic values to effectively communicate its message. Using a mix of coherence, intensity, complexity, and originality, the film is a successful piece of satire and social comment. One of the most important artistic values of any film is the level of coherence used to keep the audience engaged. Without some sense of coherence, the audience would be confused about the point that the film is trying to portray. The ability to connect events in a chronological order provides understanding for the viewer as they follow along with the story being told. Roger and Me
