Chris Stewart Hist 202 1/18/13 Compromise of 1877 The Compromise of 1877 was a secret agreement between Republican leaders and conservative southern Democrats that would change how the South would treat its black population for years to come. The compromise was made in order to get Republican Governor Rutherford Hayes the presidency, and end the filibuster of Democratic Governor Samuel Tilden.
