Executive SummaryThe scope of this study was to look into the sustainability of hotels as one of the primary factorsof tourism development. to guide the research, the city of Barcelona as chosen as the case studyby looking into three major hotels of different levels – three-star, four-star, and five-star. Overthe last three decades, there has been remarkable growth in the tourism industry making itscontributions to the global economy and international trade very significant. Although there arepositive impacts on the economy as a result of conventional tourism, the industry also has severeeffects considering its size. Such effects include displacement of the local population beforearrival of visitors, overcrowding, erosion, and pollution of natural reserves among others;therefore, it is important that the issue of sustainable tourism is looked into. A quantitativeresearch design was employed for this study. In addition to using secondary sources forcollecting data, the researcher collected the main data used in the research from interviews andquestionnaires. The study was conducted in three hotels all based in Barcelona – H10 Montcada(three-star), H10 Cubik (four-star), and Hilton Diagonal (star). Guests from the three wereinterviewed and asked to fill out questionnaires; also, a professional in the field of sustainabilityin tourism was interviewed to give an in-depth insight on sustainability in tourism. The researchresults indicated that five-star hotels had better sustainability practices as compared to three-starhotels. Also, five-star guests were deemed to take into consideration sustainability practicesbefore choosing a hotel to stay. It is recommended that hotels employ sustainability practices toensure that practices in the industry do not have a negative impact on the environment and thecommunity at large.
