Ian Tierson Professor Bloom English 212 5/12/2009 Characterization of Ophelia: from Maiden to Madness The character of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet allows for quite of deal of interpretation. Shakespeare sets the groundwork of a female who loves prince Hamlet, must reject him, is berated by Hamlet for that rejection, loses her father by Hamlet’s hand, and then loses her mind. This leaves a director with many choices for her motivations and likeness. Two directors with disparate characterizations are Michael Almereyda and Kenneth Branaugh. Both play Ophelia as Shakespeare prescribes in his writing, although each has his own twist to add. Branaugh, it seems, set out to create a “perfect” representation of Shakespeare’s play in cinematic form. Although the setting is quite sometime after Shakespeare’s era, the original language is there in its entirety. He overcame the enormous amount of talking in the play, for this is a play with but one scene of true action, using many cinematic techniques including voiceovers, close-ups, and juxtaposing perspectives. For Ophelia’s character, he cast Kate Winslet a well-practiced actress of extremely good looks, although she had not hit it big yet (Hamlet came out a year before Titanic , which was a great success for her).
