Barbera: Grape Varietal Report Barbera is a red grape varietal that is the second most highly produced grape in Italy. Some of the most reputable regions producing this popular grape include: Alba, Aosta, Monferrato, Sardinia, Asti, and Puglia. While the Barbera grape is native to the Northwestern region of Italy called Piedmont, it is also grown in several other countries. The worldwide production of this grape totals 62,900 acres (25,454 hectares). The United States grows this grape varietal on 7,000 acres (mostly in California) with notable regions including the Sierra Foothills, Central Valley and Santa Barbara. Australia ranks third in Barbera grape production with about 2,000 acres of land being used for this grape with the top regions containing Mudgee, McClaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. Argentina trails with 1,300 acres used for growing Barbera grapes with San Juan and Mendoza being the nation’s headliners.
