Patrick Sullivan Sociology 106 CE Final 12/13/06 Writing Prompt #1 In “Stability and Change in Chicano Men’s Family Lives” Scott Coltrane discusses three main models of “new” families. These new ideas about the family categorize each family into 3 groups which are: the main provider, the ambivalent co- provider, and the co-provider family. The family defined as a main provider consists of a husband and a wife where the husband earns a substantially higher wage than the wife and the husband is the “natural” breadwinner. The wife of the main provider family is expected to deal with the children and keep the house in order. It is also possible for the wife to have a job but one that is not considered high paying or long term. In the ambivalent co-provider, the husband and wife were almost, if not, economically equal concerning wage earning and status. They both earned roughly the same amount of money but the women of the marriage are expected to keep the house in order. Also the
