Patrick Sullivan Sociology 106 CE Writing Prompt #4 In “Jobless Ghettoes” by William Wilson, the author discusses high levels of joblessness. Wilson accredits the high levels of joblessness, which is where work is unavailable whether it is legitimate or not, to the disappearance of work in the inner city. What Wilson means by the disappearance of work is that jobs are being suburbanized and “many ghetto residents can’t afford cars and public transportation is time consuming.”(Wilson 331) Since a lot of high paying work has migrated to the suburbs, there has been a decline in highly educated people and an increase in less-educated workers in the inner city. Another reason why there are high levels of joblessness is that there have been changes in “class, racial, and demographic composition of inner-city neighborhoods.” As the rich upper-class whites have moved out of the city to the suburbs, they have been replaced by poorer minorities with little or no education, which
