Unformatted text preview: gally risked his life for his country, had a son, married a woman, bought a house, voted in the election, bought cigarettes, and legally owned a gun, but was unable to drink a beer. I am here today to persuade you that America should lower its national drinking age to 18 rather than the current age of 21. I know this topic is somewhat relevant to most all of us because in my audience analysis survey all but two of you said that you knew someone who regularly participated in underage drinking. So as someone who has researched this topic extensively, I will explain to you the problem, why the drinking age of 21 is causing the problem, and show you a logical and reasonable solution. II. The problem with alcohol abuse in America is not simply that underage people are drinking, but that underage people are drinking who don’t know how to do so responsibly. A. The NIAAA the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism tells us that about 4 in every 5 college students drink. (College 1) 1. This statistic probably doesn’t surprise many of you because in your audience analysis surveys all but two of you reported knowing someone who regularly participates in underage drinking. 2. The NIAAA tells us that there are about 10.8 million underage drinkers in the U.S., and that, and this is the problem, about 5,000 underage Americans die each year from result of alcohol abuse.
