Daniel Yim Dr. Hoagland English 133.033 13 October 2007 Critique of Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price In 2005, right-wing political activist Robert Greenwald released a new documentary that pertains to a case study of Wal-Mart, the most prominent supermarket chain in America. Titled Wal- Mart: The High Cost of Low Price , the statistics-laden film paints a dark image of the corporation by surfacing unpleasant truths through various interviews of past and current employees and other individuals who were affected by the company. The documentary asserts that Wal-Mart’s wage policies are irresponsible and corrupt as well as indifferent to the communities it interacts in. Resolving to fix the issue, Greenwald’s purpose is to promote aggressive activism against the development of new Wal-Mart stores in communities that are not yet affected. While Greenwald may present points that are valid in that some of the issues are indeed corporate responsibilities, his methods of persuasion are deceptive, and his argument is unbearably one-dimensional. In Greenwald’s documentary, he advocates a pessimistic outlook of Wal-Mart, a corporation known to him as the biggest, baddest supermarket retailer, and undergoes an elaborate hate-speech against the company for 95 minutes.
