My Thoughts on Personal Identity TheoryPSY167Over the last couple of weeks we have been discussing, among other things, theproblems of personal identity. This topic has several different viewpoints mentioned in thebook, but I have have my own opinions about what is actually the case regarding the problem ofpersonal identity. In regards to the personal identity theory, my beliefs lean toward the SoulTheory of personal identity more than anything else.Several different theories have been developed in response to the problem of personalidentity theory. They all try to address the question of how we as people remain the sameduring our lives, if in fact we remain the same at all. One could argue that they are never in thesame mental state and they never have the same thought processes at one time in their life asthey did at some other time, meaning that they are perpetually changing from one person toanother new person with each moment they are alive. They argue that their previous self, sayfrom the day before, did not have the experiences from the present day, and is therefore a
different person from what they were the day before. This is called the Illusion Theory, and I callit nonsense. I do not think a person becomes a new person constantly. Granted, no one staysthe same, but that does not mean that they become a new person, it just means that they aremore experienced than they were before. I do not equate experience with changing into a newperson.
