Chapter 3 The main point of chapter three is to explain to the readers that the technology of corn manufacturing has advanced so drastically over the last decade. He starts off by saying that he was in Iowa and the only thing he could see for miles is grain elevators. With the coming of the railroad system and the great invention of grain elevators the piles of rotting corn now had a safe and clean place to sit. With a little time and a little thought people of this time realized that they needed a conveyer to move the corn into the train cars. Polland described a Cargill train that stretched from “more than a mile long and holding 440,000 bushels of corn. Rules and guidelines came into play in 1856 when the Chicago Board of Trade instituted a grading system. “There was no longer any reason for anyone to care where the corn came from or who grew it, as long as it met the board’s standard.
