Stomata – minute holes in leaves of plants that allow air to pass to the interior of the plant WHAT DO PLANTS AND AIR DO FOR EACH OTHER? Plants respire like animals – take oxygen and release carbon dioxide But also photosynthesize in light Remove carbon dioxide and put back oxygen - the air Take water from soil WHERE DO THE ATOMS GO IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS? 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 photosynthesis – reverse respiration carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen CO 2 + H 2 O C(H 2 O) + O 2 another way of writing photosynthesis carbon dioxide + water carbohydrate + oxygen The oxygen released by plants comes from water, not from carbon dioxide Photophosphorylation – use light energy to phosphorylate (add a phosphate group) something Light-dependent reactions – reactions that use light – includes photophosphorylation Light-independent reactions – uses no photons; e.g. use ^energy to make glucose 7.2 HOW DO PLANTS COLLECT ENERGY FROM THE SUN? WHAT IS LIGHT? Photons – particles that make up light; 186,000 miles/second; a package of energy; no mass All travel at same speed, but depending on wavelength, have different energy levels Blue/violet (shorter wavelengths) – more energy Red/orange (longer wavelengths) – less energy Wavelength – distance between successive crests Visible light – light with wavelengths between 390 nm and 760 nm Light excites electrons in special molecules during photosynthesis – increase free energy
