Dr. Faustus is a man that gives up wealth and good standing for magic, only to fear death and loose his life to Lucifer. Step 3. Identify the time period of the play. Setting of the play: Wittenburg, Germany about 1580. This date is not specified. Authorship of the play: Christopher Marlowe wrote Dr. Faustus around 1592, once again the exact date is unknown Step 4. Learn about the author Born in Canterbury but moved to Cambridge to study to become a clergyman, yet he didn’t pursue this career. He wrote seven plays of which Tamburlaine , Dr. Faustus , and the Jew of Malta are the most popular. He was not well liked and was killed in a fight at a tavern as a result of being stabbed in the head. Step 5. Reflect on the genre of the play Tragedy- This play shows the tragedy of man and how susceptible he is to falling and following the wrong thing.
