Jodi Krakower FC 46 – Caribbean Societies Lecture 11 10-22-07 The Modernization of Puerto Rico Problems addressed in this part of the course - In light of the Caribbean experience o What does national development mean? o How do 3 rd world countries get out of poverty? o Approaches to the 3 rd world development What is development? - Growing consensus that it is not simply per capita economic growth - Development is a matter of self-sustained growth by which a people overcome o Economic deprivation o Social injustices o And political unfreedoms An important distinction - modernity and development not the same o modernity = modern lifestyle, values o development = self-sustained growth - it is possible to be modern without being developed o many instances of this in the Caribbean - being modern can actually retard development o true of many Caribbean societies Theories of development - Modernization theory o Emphasizes social, cultural, and technical change o Technical and economic aid - Marxist/Communist theory
