Stratification Systems Stratification system – complex of social institutions that generate inequalities in the distribution of valued/valuable resources Composed of: Processes that define certain types of goods as valuable Rules of allocation for the distribution of these goods in the division of labor (what’s a good job?) Mobility mechanisms that link individuals to occupational positions and therefore resources (what do you need to get there?) Sources of Inequality Economic structure Market demand, educational/skill requirements Political structure Tax policies, wage policies, social welfare programs Cultural and social system Valued resources, language, clothing, etc. Class Systems Class: Subjective (identity) Objective/gradational (status attainment) Relational (differential life chances) Historical (macro-variations across time and place) Normative - Foundation of economic oppression and exploitation
