“Beyond Suburbia: The rise of the technoburb” by Robert Fishman notes Fishman coined 2 terms: 1. technoburb – peripheral zones that spreads along highways - unplanned with little pattern/structure - could be as large as a country, but with no proper boundaries - has became socioeconomic units 2. Technocity – the whole metropolitan region, changed by the technoburb - circular highways, multicentered - designed to allow traffic to avoid going through central cities Older central cities have become more marginal, causing the technoburb to emerge Post 1945 America: Age of Great Suburbs – central cities declined in pop. and industry = growth in peripheries Between 1950-1970 – central cities grew by 10 mil people - suburbs by 85mil + - suburbs – ¾ of all new jobs in manufacturing and retail 1970s – central cities = net out migration of 13 million people - lead to deindustrialization, housing problems and poverty decentralized city caused by – more advanced communications, rather than face to
