Emo Music is Not Art With the drastic changes in society over the past century there have been many different types of music and genres. From Rock n’ Roll music to rap music many people find a social connection between the artist and themselves. In the later part of the twentieth century a form of music known as emo arose in the music industry. This form of music targets a young, depressed, anti-social group of people who are going through a certain phase in their life. With music being one of the many forms of art, it is hard for me to classify emo music as a form of art. The definition of art is the high quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; the aesthetic value (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/art). With this generic definition of art along with what was talked about in class, that for something to be considered music it must be both simultaneously spiritual and contain material, emo music is not a form of art. Why do people listen to a certain genre of music instead of another? People chose one type of music over the other because they have a connection with that type of music or artist. The blues became popular in the later 1800’s early 1900’s during the slavery movement in America. This genre of music became popular with many people, especially black slaves of the south. They would express there hope and dreams of becoming a free person through rhythm, melody, and song. They would also tell their triumphant stories of how they survive these hard times and struggles. Unlike emo music, the blues is a true form of art written for and by a specific group in society. The roots of emo music are unknown.
