POL U155 Comparative Politics Fall 2007 Mid-term Study Guide Format The exam will be one hour long. From 1:35 – 2:35. Thursday October 11 th . The format of PART I will be 20-25 multiple choice questions (allow about 20 minutes). PART II will be two essay questions (allow about forty minutes). You will not be given a choice on the essay questions. However to help you prepare, here is an example of the type of essay question you might receive. 1. Test and discuss the following two hypotheses: 1 .”The single member district system has enhanced governmental stability and efficiency in Britain, but proportional representation will prevent both.” 2. “Japan’s electoral system is largely responsible for the dominance of one party, the Liberal Democratic Party, and it is also largely responsible for political corruption in Japan.” Identify the dependent and independent variables in each hypothesis. What would you expect the evidence to show if the hypotheses are true? Based on the evidence from your readings and class lectures do you expect these hypotheses to be true? The exam will cover everything on the syllabus through and including Women and Politics
