STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY Freud believed basic character was formed by age 5 years He organized the structure of the personality into three major components. 3 psychic structures : Id, ego, and superego . Psychic Structures : A hypothesized mental structure that helps explain different aspects of behavior . Cannot be seen or measured directly, but their presence is suggested by the behavior, expressed thoughts and emotions.
PSYCHIC STRUCTURES 3 Psychic Structures 1) Id : ( Pleasure principle ) Present at birth. It represents physiological drives that are completely unconscious. Operates to demands of pleasure principle - strive to satisfy desires and reduce inner tension. Driven behaviors are impulsive and may be irrational 2) Ego ( Reality principle) Develops during the first year of life, characterized by self awareness, planning and delay gratification. Ego Deals with real world. Develops between the ages of 4 and 6 months . Experiences the reality of the external world, adapt to it, and respond to it. 3) Superego . ( Moral principle ) Develops as a child and functions as a moral guardian and sets forth high standards for behavior. Initializes the values and morals set forth by primary caregivers.
STAGES OF PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT Freud believed that sexual impulses are a central factor in personality development, even among children. - Sexual feelings are closely linked to children’s basic ways of relating to the world, such as sucking their mother’s breasts . Psychosexual Development : The process in which libidinal energy ( sexual energy) is expressed through erogenous zones( sensitivity in body ) during different stages of development.
STAGES OF PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT 1) Oral Stage
STAGES OF PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT 2) Anal Stage : ( 18 months to 3 years). Begins in the 2 nd year, when gratification is attained through anal activities( elimination of waste).
